Born in Gifu Prefecture. After graduating from college, she went to Paris, where she taught herself to paint. In 1975, her first book "A Child’s Book of Seasons" was published by Heinemann Young Books in the UK. Another book, "Suzette and Nicolas at the Market" (Gautier Languereau), won the Critici in Erba Prize at the Bologna Book Fair in 1978. Her particular talent is depicting children and nature. She is active in children’s literary circles in France and the US, as well as in Japan. "Come Fly With Me" (Philomel), "My Father’s Soup" (l’ecole des loisirs) and many other of her titles have been published by publishers outside of Japan.
